These objectives are asking students to prepare their presentation based off of the knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, and evaluation levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Materials Needed: Paper, pencils, colored markers, crayons, posterboard, encyclopedias, atlases, computer with Internet access, U.S. Geography: The South (DVD), DVD player, television, headphones, PowerPoint, Google Earth, SMART Board
Activities and Procedures:
Monday: Watch the video, U.S. Geography: The South as a class and pause to answer the onscreen questions as they come up. Have students record their answers in their social studies notebooks. Ask students about what physical features the video discusses and make a classroom list of specific physical features found in the South.
Student Response Activity: Complete the word search of vocabulary words that I handed out during our lesson. Look up definitions using www.dictionary.com and record what you find in your social studies notebook.
Tuesday: Review the notes taken from Monday’s video. Display pictures of the following physical features on Google Earth and compare them, all found in the South. Have students note their differences and similarities on the SMART Board:
Mississippi River
Chesapeake Bay
Florida Everglades
Southern Appalachian Mountains (Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains)
South Carolina's Sea Islands
Student Response Activity: Create a KWL chart using MS Word about what you know already about the geography of the south, what you would like to know, and what you learned from today’s discussion. Then, play a game on Kids Geography called the "United States of America Map Game" to become familiar with the location of states.

Wednesday: Briefly discuss the economy, culture, and geography of these Southern features. Help students become familiar with the terms estuary, tributary, delta, and wetland and their association with any of the five physical features being discussed. Review the terms weather and climate, and then discuss the South's general weather and climate with students.
Student Response Activity: Listen to the podcast linked below and take notes on what you hear about the geography, economy, and culture of the southern states. Then, complete the crossword puzzle I handed out this morning.

Thursday: Divide the class into groups, and assign each one of the five physical features to research. Tell the groups to prepare a PowerPoint presentation for the class about their assigned feature. Also required is a posterboard with a visual of the physical feature they are presenting on. Each presentation should be a minimum of five minutes in length, maximum of 10 minutes. The presentations also should include the following aspects of each physical feature:
General overview of the feature, including its location and geographic definition
Physical map of the area

A visual aid
Weather and climate of the area
Environment, including types of animals and vegetation found in and around the area
Economy
Culture
Current environmental, cultural, or economic issues
Student Response Activity: Meet with groups and work on PowerPoint presentations! Also, start work on the visual aid that you will be using during your presentation.
Friday: Have groups present on their assigned physical feature.
Student Response Activity: Finish presentations and assign roles for who will speak when.

Assessment:
Three points: Students actively participated in class discussions and their group's PowerPoint presentation; worked cooperatively in research groups; PowerPoint presentation met time requirements and all eight criteria; delivered a well-organized, informative presentation; attentively listened to other presentations. Visual aid was accurate and easy to read.

Two points: Students somewhat participated in class discussions and their group's PowerPoint presentation; worked somewhat cooperatively in research groups; PowerPoint presentation met time requirements and five criteria; delivered an informative presentation; somewhat listened to other presentations. Visual aid was accurate and somewhat clear.

One point: Students worked somewhat cooperatively in research groups; PowerPoint presentation met three or less criteria; delivered a disorganized or incomprehensive presentation; somewhat listened to other presentations. No visual aid provided.
